General Atomics Mechanical Systems Integration Design Engineer Poway, California

We have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer within the Systems Integration Group. Under general supervision with limited review, the successful candidate will design metallic and composite mounting structure for avionics and payloads in remotely piloted aircraft while optimizing fit, function, thermal, manufacturing, maintainability, quality, cost and schedule considerations. This position will perform stress and modal analysis as a design aid, create and review drawings and create reports and project documentation. This position will have opportunities to work in a hands-on environment to create prototype mock-ups and validate packaging solutions on actual aircraft. May coordinate segments of a specific project and may have frequent inter-organization and customer contact on difficult technical issues.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Applies technical knowledge to design, analyze, investigate and resolve assigned engineering problems utilizing standard engineering and scientific principles.

  • Utilizes 3D computer aided design (CAD) software for design solutions and drawings.

  • Performs structural analysis for design validation using engineering software.

  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of configuration management of large assemblies.

  • Creates documentation and presents engineering changes to the change control board.

  • Performs tolerance analysis and demonstrates thorough understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.

  • Performs hands-on investigation of problems and validation of solutions.

  • Creates and presents design review documentation to engineering management.

  • Interacts with program office and engineers across multiple disciplines.

  • Directs the activities of designers and may direct the activities of less experienced professional staff.

  • Maintains the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Responsible for observing all laws, regulations and other applicable obligations wherever and whenever business is conducted on behalf of the Company.

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a bachelors degree, masters degree or PhD in mechanical engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; four or more years of experience with a bachelors degree or two or more years of experience with a masters degree. May substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of education.

  • Must have aptitude and demonstrated design experience with 3D CAD engineering software for design and drawing creation.

  • Must have a complete understanding of engineering concepts, principles, codes, and theory; experience demonstrating a broad application of those concepts; and, expanding knowledge of principles, concepts, theory, and practices in related technical specialties.

  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly; apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; organize, schedule, and coordinate work phases; and determine the appropriate approach at the task level or, with assistance, at the project level to provide solutions to a range of complex problems.

  • Must have excellent communication, computer, hands-on, documentation, presentation, and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently and as part of a team; able to perform complex tasks in one engineering area; and, lead a team of less experienced professional employees on semi-routine tasks.

  • Must have a working knowledge and application of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Able to work extended hours as required.

  • A Professional Engineering License is desirable.

  • Experience with CREO / NX desirable.
