Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory NSTX-U Operations and Maintenance Training Coordinator in Princeton, New Jersey

Overview

This position will provide support for the implementation and lifecycle maintenance of the NSTX-U experimental operations training and qualification program.

Responsibilities

Core Duties

To provide safe and environmentally responsible operation of PPPL’s flagship experiment, National Spherical Torus eXperiment Upgrade (NSTX-U), NSTX-U employs a systematic approach to operations and maintenance training as part of a robust conduct of operations program. The incumbent will provide technical support for management of the NSTX-U training program throughout the system lifecycle in accordance with Lab and DOE standards.

NSTX-U Engineering Operations and Maintenance Training (85%)

  • Coordinate the development of experimental operations and maintenance training materials with System Engineers and subject matter experts, ensuring consistency and quality.

  • Perform maintenance on Training & Qualification documentation and implementation procedures.

  • Support development of training matrices.

  • Review operator qualification packages for completeness and recommend completed qualification packages to engineering operations management for approval.

  • Develop classroom training schedules and coordinate on-the-job training activities with facility status.

  • Participate in training effectiveness reviews and assess effectiveness of classroom and on-the-job training.

  • Monitor training of operators and experimental area accessors for expiration and renewal.

  • Design, develop, and implement instructor training material.

  • Design, develop, and implement maintenance training material.

  • Coordinate delivery of third party technical and operations training.

    Engineering Operations Documentation Support (15%)

  • Review, revise, and create administrative and general operations procedures.

    Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • A technical related discipline associate’s degree from an accredited college or equivalent technical certification such as vocational training or military duty in a related field of study is preferred.

  • Minimum technical experience required: 12 years with associate’s degree/technical certificate, or 8 years with bachelor’s degree.

  • 3 + years experience delivering technical training, preferably for operating equipment or systems.

  • Experience in an industrial, military, or national lab (DOE, DOD, NSF, etc.) is beneficial.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to work with a diverse array of individuals, from maintenance crews to research collaborators is required.

  • Experience in the instructional design of technical training material is required.

  • Experience in the preparation of technical documentation such as operational, maintenance and installation procedures is required.

  • Ability to interface effectively with a wide range of scientific and technical personnel.

Certificates and Licenses

  • PPA Procedure Writer Certification beneficial.

  • Course work or training in instruction design is beneficial.

Physical Requirements'

  • Full or fully corrected vision, correct depth and color perception, occasional close work, work in low light conditions.

  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

  • No medical restrictions working near static magnetic fields.

  • Capable of climbing ladders, continuous walking, standing or sitting.

  • Will work in environments with normal industrial hazards such as confined spaces, elevations, and where electrically/mechanically energized equipment may be present.

  • Routinely wear protective clothing and equipment, primarily hardhats, safety glasses, and electrical PPE.

Working Conditions

  • Most work will be done at the PPPL offices, shops, and laboratories.

  • Work will generally be 1st shift.
