Provo City is looking for a Storm Water Maintenance Operator to be responsible for the construction, operation, and upkeep of Provo City’s storm water system. What is the compensation?
Pay Rate: (G23, G24, G25, G26) $21.46 - $34.25 per hour (depending on experience)

Operate and maintain the storm drain system.
Clean and repair pipes, trash racks, inlet and diversion structures, pump stations, sump pumps, and other system facilities.
Perform minor maintenance and repair of equipment.
Identify abnormal conditions and resolve basic operation issues.
Prepare ditches and lay pipe.
Clean and maintain storm drains and irrigation ditches.
Mix and finish cement.
Perform field investigations relating to the size and location of storm drains and irrigation culverts.
Maintain, repair, install, and excavate water mains, service lines, fire hydrants, valves, water meters, fountains, and sprinklers.
Assist others as needed and perform other related duties as required.

Independently perform all duties of lower-level storm water maintenance operators.
Install pipe, manholes, sumps, inlet boxes, and other storm drain systems.
Perform pump repair and pump station maintenance duties.
Troubleshoot electrical and mechanical issues in pump stations and SCADA.
Evaluate and execute construction changes.
Interpret layout of storm drainage projects.
Maintain all aspects of the City’s NPDES permit.
Prepare and present various written reports and records.
Operate jet/vac truck to clear lines.
What are the minimum requirements?
Provo City will honor equivalent experience.
An equivalent to a high school diploma (GED), a valid, lawful commercial driver license, and a flagger certificate is required for all levels. Additional education may be substituted for experience as allowed by the State of Utah to qualify for unrestricted water systems operator certification.
Apprentice
- One year of experience in construction or other work requiring mechanical aptitude.
Operator I
- One year of professional storm water operator experience and Unrestricted Grade I Utah Water Systems Operator Certification.
Operator II
- Two years of professional storm water operator experience and Unrestricted Grade II Utah Water Systems Operator Certification.
Operator III
Four years of professional water operator experience and Unrestricted Grade III Utah Water Systems Operator Certification.
What is the selection process?
Applications will be reviewed in the order they are submitted, with the first screening being held on March 10, 2025. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications listed above to be eligible for consideration.
If selected for hire, candidate will be required to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. Applicants with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
