ICF Environmental Statistician in Reston, Virginia

Description

To support ICF’s dynamic growth and expanding client base, we are seeking an Environmental Statistician to work in our Health Science Practice. This group of 120+ science professionals provide toxicology, hazard assessment, epidemiology, risk assessment, exposure assessment, environmental modeling, and related support that addresses the full spectrum of potentially hazardous agents, including chemicals and microbes. We specialize in identifying and quantifying the effects of environmental pollutants, such as metals, pesticides, and volatile organic compounds, on human health and the environment.

The Environmental Statistician’s project work would support federal agencies such as U.S. EPA and NIEHS in assessing the human health impacts of pollutants. Specific tasks would involve quantitative analyses of various environmental datasets, including biomonitoring data, toxicological assays, epidemiological study data and meta-analyses, and environmental modeling of exposure to pollutants.

This position is remote; hybrid options are available in Durham, NC and Reston, VA.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the senior statistician and technical lead on projects involving statistics, environmental modeling, and data visualization. Specific examples include:

  • Analyzing NHANES data to estimate urinary or blood concentrations of pollutants of regulatory significance. Incorporate the data into broader indicators of exposure, especially in children.

  • Review of in silico, in vivo, and in vitro datasets to develop statistical models of the data to support risk assessment, with a particular emphasis on New Alternative Methods data. This includes quantitative dose-response work.

  • Review the body of epidemiological data for specific chemicals or endpoints and determine the quality of the statistical models; develop additional quantitative dose-response relationships and/or meta-analyses.

  • Review large-scale exposure models written in the SAS language and assist with commenting, packaging, or otherwise modifying the code to support research and development efforts.

  • Assist with the development of web applications to support management and visualization of environmental data, including applications such as R-Shiny, Power BI, and others.

  • Mentor and train staff in the above areas to build the overall statistical capacity of the group.

  • Develop technical publications and guidance, presentations at conferences, and proposal sections.

Note this position does not involve hands-on laboratory or field work.

Basic Qualifications:

  • PhD in statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health, or related subject

  • 3+ years of professional work experience in support of chemical/exposure risk assessments.

  • Equivalent years of education and/or work experience will be considered.

  • This experience (at least 3 years) must include proficiency in one or more statistical software packages (e.g., R, SAS, or STATA), as well as Microsoft Office software.
