Summary:

The Senior Health Information Management Specialist is responsible for assisting the HIM Operations Supervisor in facilitating the day-to-day operations, task assignments, training, and quality reviews of assigned team members, and reporting potential issues and trends. The incumbent serves as a superuser and designated trainer for new software applications or upgrades and is responsible for the development of training materials and operational workflows for all areas of responsibility. The Senior Health Information Management Specialist will provide support for all assigned areas during periods of staffing variances due to scheduled and unscheduled PTO and position vacancies. The Senior Health Information Management Specialist is responsible for monitoring day-to-day assignments to ensure work is completed promptly and accurately, and facilitating documentation corrections, as appropriate.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs quality reviews and monitoring of the processing of medical records which may include, but are not limited to: medical record retrieval, prepping, scanning, indexing, quality control, chart analysis, record completion, birth registry, and disclosure management (release of information).

  • Reports findings, potential issues and trends to the supervisor, as required.

  • Serves as the designated superuser for all systems utilized in HIM.

  • Develops workflows and provides ongoing training.

  • Monitors daily work assignments, and adjusts tasks based on priorities.

  • Reviews and processes applicable workflow management reports.

  • Develops and maintains reporting tools and provides monthly summaries to HIM leadership.

  • Maintains employee orientation guides, process flow charts, and training job aides.

  • Assists in focused audits, training, and re-training, providing objective reporting on individual progress and proficiency.

  • Provides backup coverage as needed.

  • Assists in developing and/or revising policies and procedures about HIM operations.

  • Troubleshoots and contacts appropriate areas for resolution during downtime and system inoperability.

  • Coordinates special projects as assigned, and provides appropriate follow-up.

  • Performs other related duties.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Preference given to candidates with an Associate's degree in HIM or related field

  • 1-2 yr. HIM experience in hospital/healthcare network environment

  • Solid understanding of hospital EMR & HIM dept. systems and applications

  • Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills, comfortable presenting to management

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team as well as independently

  • Preference given to candidates with Health Information Management (RHIA or RHIT) certification
