This Network Architect will leverage their expertise and lead the strategy, definition, and realization of architecture and design within the CarMax. The successful candidate must be a thought leader in the network landscape and have a solid track record of execution and delivering results. The position is responsible for the overall technical design and build of the necessary network components for CarMax.

The Network Architect will be a technical leader, driving Architecture and implementation of highly scalable network solutions on the Microsoft Azure Public Cloud and On-Premises environment. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining CarMax network architecture to ensure optimal performance, security, and scalability. As a member of the Network Services team, you will work alongside reliability teams to ensure site reliability and that all releases seamlessly move from development through staging and into production.

What you will do – Essential Responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee the implementation of complex network solutions to support and enhance business operations. This includes managing the full lifecycle of network projects from conception through execution.

  • Provide technical leadership in network projects, collaborating closely with various departments to ensure alignment with business goals. Actively influence technical direction to ensure project success within established architectural standards and guidelines.

  • Safeguard CarMax systems and networks against security threats, including breaches, cyber threats, and vulnerabilities by working in tandem with Technology teams to strengthen network security protocols.

  • Mentor and train network engineers, aiming to build a knowledgeable and skilled team capable of addressing complex network challenges.

  • Play a key role in strategic planning by developing future-oriented network technology roadmaps. Utilize strong communication skills to effectively convey architectural standards, best practices, and tailor messages to diverse audiences, facilitating effective group discussions and consensus-building.

  • Ensure that comprehensive network documentation is created and updated regularly for operational reference and compliance with standards.

  • Stay informed about the latest technologies and advocate for the adoption of innovative solutions that enhance network functionality.

  • Maintain a broad understanding of diverse technologies and business processes, as well as all aspects of technical requirements, including security, scalability, and usability.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • 6+ years of network architecture, design and/or Network engineering experience

  • 3+ years of network architecture design involving cloud infrastructure [AWS, Azure, Google, etc.]

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related Technology field or equivalent experience

  • Preferred Professional certifications (e.g., Cisco, Azure etc.).

  • A proven track record as a Network Architect or in a comparable role within a large-scale environment, with extensive experience in planning, designing, deploying, and supporting LAN/WAN and complex IP architectures.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of networking protocols, hardware, and software solutions. This includes expertise in deploying services and protocols such as TCP/IP, OSPF, BGP, MPLS, LAN Switching Technologies, familiarity with Next-Generation Firewalls, and Load Balancing.

  • A strong background in network security practices including firewalls, proxies, ACLs, IPSec, SSL/TLS, IPS/IDS, and VPN protocols (GRE, IPSEC, SSL, L2TP, PPTP, SSTP). Familiarity with application transport and network infrastructure protocols (e.g., SSL/TLS, NTP, FTPs, HTTP, SMTP, SSH, LDAP, and Microsoft AD), and a thorough understanding of supporting these applications/protocols through VPN and firewall appliances.

  • In-depth knowledge and hands-on experience with DNS, DHCP, IPAM technologies, and protocols, along with familiarity with DDI management platforms (e.g., Infoblox, BlueCat etc).

  • Experience in WLAN support, including RF fundamentals, design, and configuration, security management, troubleshooting, and monitoring.

  • Deep expertise in cloud computing environments, particularly with Microsoft Azure, including proficiency in cloud-native networking solutions, security practices, and hybrid cloud deployments.

  • Demonstrated ability in network troubleshooting and performance optimization techniques.

  • Excellent project management capabilities, with a knack for managing multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills are essential, with the capacity to articulate complex network concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability in advanced statistical analysis, calculations, and the provision of impactful reports.

  • Extensive experience with network security frameworks and standards (e.g., NIST, CIS) and certifications such as CISSP or CISM preferred.

  • Ability to evaluate the long-term impacts efficiently when making recommendations and decisions.

Work Authorization: Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Sponsorship will be considered for this specific role.

Work Location and Arrangement :

This role will be based out of the Richmond, VA CarMax Technology Innovation Center or the Dallas, TX Technology Hub and have a Hybrid work arrangement
