Pay is $25, with overtime paid at time and a half.
Position Summary: Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT) is seeking a full-time Archaeological Field Technician to assist with monitoring, Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III archaeological investigations, as needed. A bachelor’s degree in anthropology or a related field and a field school are required. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern United States. Candidate must be available for non-local travel.
Lodging (individual hotel room) and per diem will be provided and/or reimbursed. Mileage to and from the project, project area, and drive time will also be compensated. Rate based on experience, and number of hours per week will be based on project workload.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
The qualified candidate for this position will assist Project and Senior Archaeologists during Phase I-II field work in the South, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and Northeast United States.
The candidate will aid in identifying any pre-contact or historic artifacts encountered during shovel test pit (STP) or test unit (TU) excavation.
Candidates will assist with reporting and laboratory analysis.
Candidates must be flexible with traveling.

Required Skills
Candidates must be able to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures).
Candidates should be flexible to changing work schedules, have good organizational skills, communication skills, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn new tasks and travel.
Driver’s License Required
Must successfully complete and pass JMT's Motor Vehicle screening
Required Experience
- Qualified candidates should possess, at minimum, a bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field and have completed an accredited archaeological field school.
Preferred Experience
Experience with GPS/Trimble navigation and data collection
Experience in CRM-based archaeological survey and/or excavation
Knowledge of historic/prehistoric material culture and artifact processing
Ability to navigate using compass and USGS topographic map
Working Conditions
Work is performed in the field 60% of the time. Ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 50 lbs as needed. Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.
Work is performed within a general office environment 40% of the time. Office work is generally sedentary in nature, but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.
