POSITION SUMMARY

Marathon Petroleum Corporation’s Illinois Refining Division is seeking a Project Controls Specialist. T his role provides cost engineering services for projects managed within the Engineering and Maintenance Departments . Th e role supports major projects ($25MM - $500MM) including major revamps, new units, and other refinery project enhancements . The successful candidate will have specialized experience in Project Controls during Engineering phases FEL 1, 2, and 3 for major projects.

The candidate will be an active project team member providing key input and analysis to project management to facilitate timely decision making . They will manage changes to the project forecast and budget, interfacing regularly with Engineering, Maintenance, Accounting, and Project Team personnel.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with outside engineering firms to ensure project control expectations and deliverables are met by facilitating project controls workshops and participating in project meetings.

  • Track required project deliverables, communicate to management if key deliverables are not being completed or deviating from schedule, and ensure final deliverables are retained by document controls.

  • Review cost estimates for projects and develop control budgets. Ensure the construction control budget and cash flow are aligned with schedule and cost estimates at project sanctioning.

  • Ensure construction control estimates are aligned with the definition phase budget used for sanctioning prior to commencing execution .

  • Work with the Project Manager to establish planned cash flow and realistic forecasts of the overall project.

  • Report the cost forecast monthly to local Engineering Leadership alongside the Project Manager.

  • Monitor and report project costs , performing analysis regarding deviations from the definition phase or control budget.

  • Responsible for change management documentation and review.

  • Review budget proposals for accuracy in cost and schedule.

  • Support the Project Manager in budget planning for applicable projects including cash flow and schedule deliverables and alignment.

  • Manage project contingency and drawdown plans.

  • Work closely with Supply Chain for major equipment progress payment status and accruals.

  • Facilitate and participate in risk assessments, peer reviews, and audits as necessary.

  • Lead the development and review of the monthly project status report (PSR) and report to the corporate Refining Project Management team.

  • Evaluate project risks and communicate cost and/or schedule exposure to project management.

  • Analyze schedule s and recognize and report areas of concern or caution.

  • Review progress for accuracy and overall project percent complete reporting based on the project schedule.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    Minimum (Required) Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in Project Controls.

  • Availability for a Monday-Thursday 10-hour shift schedule, and support for Turnaround and shutdowns as required .

  • Valid Driver's License .

  • High School Diploma or equivalent . (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in construction/project management or engineering .

  • Familiarity with SAP, Primavera, RCR, IPS, and/or Icarus software.

  • Experience with industrial EPC projects, specifically Front-End engineering.

  • 10+ years of experience in heavy industrial, refining, or petrochemical major project controls and deliverables experience with a focus on EPC Major Capital projects.

    Desired Skills

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products – Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook.

  • Ability to provide data reporting to the Project Team regularly and upon request using Primavera, Excel, and/or Power BI Tools.
