POSITION DESCRIPTION

Police Cadet

Limited Appointment Opportunity

Individuals hired will be scheduled to work less than 14 hours per week

This opportunity works well for students preparing for a career in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement or similar field.

Nature of Work

Under the direction of an assigned Police Department supervisor, this part-time temporary position will work with the police department to assist with community and department needs. Duties may include but are not limited to assisting with traffic control, parking enforcement, community events (4th of July fireworks, Thursdays on 1st, Concert in the Park, Rochesterfest, and National Night Out), vehicle escorts, ride-alongs with Police Officers and Community Service Officers (CSOs), assisting animal control, clerical duties as assigned, and community outreach programs.

WORK SCHEDULE

This position will be scheduled "as needed" with days and times which may vary from week to week. This position is generally designated for college students who are working towards a career in Law Enforcement. All efforts are made to be cognizant of and work around class schedules in order to assist and encourage students in achieving their degree.

2024 PAY RATE:

$16.81 per hour

Pursuant to MN Statute, seasonal assignments are limited to 67 working days per calendar year or 100 working days per calendar year if the employees are under the age of 22, are full-time students enrolled in a nonprofit or public educational institution prior to being hired by the employer, and have indicated, either in an application for employment or by being enrolled at an educational institution for the next academic year or term, an intention to continue as students during or after their temporary employment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The work below is representative of the scope of work performed within this job classification. Individual job duties will vary based on work assignment or location.

  • Interact professionally and positively with the public.

  • Participate in community engagement events and/or activities as assigned.

  • Support Police Officers and Community Service Officers with traffic control as needed.

  • Perform parking enforcement related duties.

  • Assist Animal Control staff with daily feeding and cleaning duties and other miscellaneous, non-enforcement related tasks as identified and assigned.

  • Provide funeral escorts.

  • Lend support to officers and CSO's during ride-alongs.

  • Complete clerical duties as assigned.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

A High School diploma or the equivalent (GED) and be at least 18 years old

Current enrollment in a 2- or 4-year Law Enforcement or Criminal Justice AAS or BA/BS program

Licenses and Certifications

Valid Driver's License

Knowledge of: Police protocols

Skill in: dealing tactfully and courteously with community members and co-workers; exemplifying teamwork to accomplish Police Department goals quickly and efficiently; relating well interpersonally with individuals or groups; being organized and managing time effectively.

Ability to: establish and maintain effective working relationships; speak with confidence and professionalism with individuals or groups; operate communications equipment such as a cell phone and police radio; communicate well in written and verbal formats; work well both alone or as part of a team.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CRITERIA

Environmental conditions. While work in this role does include indoor work with no exposure to elements, some work is outdoors or in areas where conditions may exist in the performance of the essential functions of this job to include:

Extreme cold (below 32 degrees)

Extreme heat (above 100 degrees)

Exposure to dust/gas/fumes/steam/chemicals

Work outdoors (no effective protection from weather)
