Job Responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all sales tax and other indirect tax compliance and reporting responsibilities for the University including:

  • Preparation and review of sales and use tax returns, including filings prepared both within and outside the tax department.

  • Preparation and review of all other indirect tax returns such as value added tax, excise tax, occupancy tax, fuel tax, highway tax, et.al, including filings prepared both within and outside the tax department.

  • Resolve all tax notices, questionnaires, and inquiries received from tax authorities and other regulatory bodies for assigned tax types.

  • Manage all tax audits, examinations, and reviews performed by tax authorities and other regulatory bodies for assigned tax types.

  • Administer the sales tax exemption certificate workstreams for the University including:

  • In state and out of state sales tax exemptions for all University purchases through procurement, purchasing cards, travel cards, and other forms of payment.

  • Review, processing, and storage of all in state and out of state sales tax exemption certificates provided to the University.

  • Respond to questions from all internal and external stakeholders received directly, from a shared mailbox, or via a service ticket, for assigned tax types.

  • Complete well organized, detailed, and conclusive tax research for all topics related to assigned tax types.

  • Prepare and maintain databases, analytics, metrics, visualizations, and dashboards for assigned tax types, including key performance indicators.

  • Lead communications and outreach to the University community regarding policies and procedures, frequently asked questions, common issues, and hot topics for assigned tax types.

  • Develop and maintain content on the Controller’s Office and other University web sites for assigned tax types.

  • Serve as the University’s subject matter expert for assigned tax types.

  • Cross train outside of assigned tax types including attending formal training, reviewing internal process documentation, shadowing other team members, and performing tasks constituting on the job training.

  • Must be able and eager to assist with matters outside of assigned tax types to execute departmental goals, smooth workload, provide business continuity and adapt to a constantly changing environment.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with tax leadership around process optimization, technology implementation, automation, and industry best practices for assigned tax types.

  • Perform tax risk assessments related to assigned tax types and work with tax leadership to communicate results to stakeholders and impacted parties.

  • Lead tax advisory engagements related to assigned tax types and make strategic recommendations to senior leadership within the Controller’s Office, Finance & Administration, and the University at large.

Required Qualifications:

  • Professional experience in tax compliance and reporting

  • Experience working in a large organization

  • Proficient computer skills including the Microsoft Suite

  • Experience with data and analytics tools

  • Enterprise-wide financial system experience

  • Experience with tax compliance software

  • Tax research experience

  • Must be able to work independently as well as in a collaborative team environment

  • Experience managing multiple workstreams simultaneously and answering to multiple stakeholders concurrently

  • Effective communication, using the appropriate medium and delivery to foster collaboration, inform decision making, and strategically execute

  • Must be committed to the principles and methodologies of continuous improvement and have the ability and desire to adopt innovative technologies and navigate change management

  • Commitment to working in a diverse and inclusive environment that embraces all students, faculty and staff

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in accounting or tax

  • Certified Public Accountant certification

  • Other accounting certifications

  • Five to seven years’ work experience

  • Professional experience in assigned tax types

  • Public accounting experience

  • Experience working in higher education or in another non-profit setting

  • Expert Excel skills

  • Recent experience with Tableau and Power BI

  • Oracle and Workday experience

  • Familiarity with K1X, Thompson Reuters, Wolters Kluwer, Vertex, Avalara, Sovos, Paychex and/or ADP products

  • Familiarity with RIA Checkpoint, Bloomberg BNA, and/or CCH AnswerConnect

Job Summary:

Responsible for preparation, analysis and reporting of the University’s tax positions with particular emphasis on compliance and reporting matters related to sales tax and other indirect taxes.

The Sales Tax Analyst is one of three full time positions in the tax department who with the Executive Director, Tax, collaborate to manage all tax compliance and reporting responsibilities for the University.
