Job Title: Phlebotomist

Job Description

Summary: The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate.

  • Update patient information.

  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.

  • Explain the process of venipuncture, blood drawing, and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) in a clear and courteous manner.

  • Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.

  • Understand all physicians' orders fully.

  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.

  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.

  • Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.

  • Package specimens for transport.

  • Store specimen samples according to required temperatures and place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately labeling and following procedures necessary for transport to maintain the integrity of the specimen.

  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.

  • Attend annual department trainings.

  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

Essential Skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • Experience with Pediatrics to Geriatrics required.

  • 2-4 years of experience as a Phlebotomist in an outpatient, patient service center, or hospital setting required.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with blood draw, venipuncture, sample collection, phlebotomy, specimen collection, and specimen processing.

  • Professionalism and customer service orientation.

Work Environment

The work environment is a doctor's office. Up to 20 draws are required daily. The worker is expected to stand for 50% of the time. The specialties include geriatric and pediatric care, with at least two years of phlebotomy experience preferred. The role involves working both with a team and alone at times. The schedule is Monday-Thursday from 8:30am-5:00pm

Friday from 8:30am-3:00pm

With a rotation on Saturdays.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $24.00/hr.
