Description of Work

This position will function as a Transportation Worker Level 4. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of State maintained roads. Work will include setting up work zones, installing traffic control devices, repairing asphalt pavements, clearing right of way of debris and hazards, assisting with pipe installation, and operating a variety of hand tools and power tools. The selected applicant will operate various pieces of equipment that include, but is not limited to, an asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, and backhoe. This position will monitor tasks performed by inmates and other transportation workers. The selected candidate will respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, and traffic control cleanup during normal business hours or during emergency callback situations and scheduled night work. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Working knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices

  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer, or sweeper

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew

  • Experience with one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching

  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations

Additional Expectations:

Physical activities include but are not limited to standing, walking, talking and hearing. Must be able to effectively communicate the English language. Ability to be exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Safety toe shoes required.

This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.

Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
