General Atomics and Affiliated Companies Sr. Director of Engineering in San Diego, California

General Atomics Electromagnetic Systems (GA-EMS) designs and manufactures first-of-a-kind electromagnetic and electric power generation systems. GA-EMS’ expanding portfolio of specialized products and integrated system solutions support critical fleet, space systems and satellites, missile defense, power and energy, and process and monitoring applications for defense, industrial, and commercial customers worldwide.

The GA-EMS Engineering organization is growing in several dimensions. The number of staff is growing as well as the number of geographically dispersed locations, specialized competencies that are required, security requirements including clearances, network credentials, and specialized tools. To provide a consistent and coherent approach, we have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Director, Engineering Services to join our Engineering Team located in Rancho Bernardo, CA.

We are seeking an individual well versed in emotional intelligence and the importance thereof, finesse, creativity, and a demonstrated ability to build and develop a new high-performing team. The successful candidate must possess a high degree of humility, resilience, authenticity, and knowledge. Given that this is a service-type position, a successful candidate will be well versed in active listening, understanding how to be political savvy, applying diplomacy, and be required to openly receive customer input, both internal and external.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Oversee all phases of engineering project(s) from inception to completion including planning and managing technical performance to ensure quality, business, and financial objectives are attained.

  • The Sr. Director will oversee the following teams, each led by a competent Manager:

  • Sustainment Engineering, including Logistics, Technical Services and Training.

  • Infrastructure Administration and Support, including Process Planning.

  • Reliability, Maintainability and Maintainability Engineering.

  • Drafting Services Product Lifecycle Management tools.

  • Component Engineering.

  • Develop and implement current, annual and long-term technical, schedule, quality, business, and financial objectives for the engineering unit(s) and may also participate in the development of Group/Company objectives.

  • Oversee the development of design concepts, criteria, and engineering efforts for product research, development, testing, and integration.

  • Influence decisions of senior leaders both within and outside the company on matters of high significance. May represent the Unit/Group/Company in relations with customers, and business and non-business communities and act as the primary spokesperson for the engineering unit(s).

  • Participate in and influence the preparation of proposals, business plans, proposal work statements and specifications, operating budgets, and financial terms/conditions of contract(s).

  • Foster and develop deserving staff members into leadership roles and collaborate creatively with peers to assure work gets done efficiently and effectively.

  • Ensure technical leadership and excellence is maintained by overseeing the planning, attraction, selection, retention, and development of the required management, professional, and technical talent.

  • Conduct business and technical briefings for senior and top management and for external representatives. Lead progress review sessions to discuss cost, schedule, and technical performance.

  • Identify engineering issues and provide leadership in developing solutions such as re-allocation of resources or modifying contract specifications.

  • Direct the development of new business opportunities and expansion of existing business opportunities. Participate with Group management in pursuing business partnerships, alliances, and joint ventures that enhance the capabilities of the Group/Company.

  • Oversee the development of and ensure the security of the unit’s proprietary technology and maintain the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.

  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Qualifications:

  • Typically requires a Masters or PhD in engineering or a related technical field as well as fifteen or more years of progressively complex engineering experience with at least eleven of those years having management responsibilities. May substitute equivalent experience in lieu of education.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance is required.

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.

  • The successful candidate must have demonstrated effectiveness as a senior leader and manager developing new high-performing teams.

  • This positions requires the ability to make effective decisions with often limited information.

  • A high degree of credibility with executive management and an unwavering ability to inspire confidence with superiors is required.

  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships with customers is required as well as the ability to deal with ambiguity.

  • Demonstrates detailed and extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice as well as comprehensive project management and leadership skills including organizing, planning, scheduling, and coordinating workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones.

  • Must possess the ability to resolve unusually complex management and technical problems and be a technical expert in one or more areas of engineering.

  • Strong communication, leadership, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required to enable an effective interface with other departments, all levels of management, professional and support staff, customers, potential customers, and government representatives.
