Job Description

The International Student Support Specialist and J1 Advisor serves in different capacities within the International Student and Scholar Services Office. Their primary roles can be summarized into two categories: overseeing the J1 Scholar Program and providing different levels of support (tax, insurance, financial, and academic) to currently enrolled F1 international students. This position reports directly to the Senior Director of International Affairs, who oversees the International Student and Scholar Services and Recruitment Offices.

Job Duties

  • Oversees and manages the J1 Scholar Program for TXST (both San Marcos and Round Rock Campus).

  • Pre-arrival and onboarding support, including housing assistance.

  • Cultural programming.

  • Offer support and immigration guidance to TXST faculty on J1 visa type.

  • Maintain SEVIS records and database for J program.

  • Prepare reports and documentation required by program sponsors, agencies, and organizational policies

  • Manages the ISSS Emergency Funding application, review, and award process. Advises students with questions on emergency funding or those in financial distress.

  • Provides support to international students who are in academic distress by ensuring they are aware of and connected to resources.

  • Oversees the student health insurance program by ensuring students are charged each semester, students are enrolled in their insurance each term, reconciliations are done in a timely manner, invoices are reviewed and paid in a timely manner, the website stays up to date, sending out communication campaigns in regards to insurance, and acting as an advisor to students with questions in regards to waivers, usage, insurance card, claims, adding dependents, etc.

  • Oversees the partnership with SprinTax (tax software code) and ensuring codes are bought in a timely manner each year and shared with students.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.
