PRINCIPAL - ERRICK ROAD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Primary Function: The Elementary School Principal is responsible to the Superintendent of Schools for the administration and supervision of the staff and building assigned to his/her jurisdiction, as well as, the educational program within the school.
Directly Responsible To: Superintendent
Cooperative Working
Relationship with: Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Technology, Assistant Superintendent of Personnel and Pupil Services, District Treasurer, Directors, Building Administrators, Managers of Buildings and Grounds, Transportation and Food Services, Teachers and all other staff assigned to the building.
Immediate Subordinates: All NWTA and NWSRPA personnel employed in the assigned building and when applicable Asst. Principal.
Assigned Responsibilities:
- The Educational Program
A. Curriculum
1.1 Provide leadership in maintaining a close working relation with the Director of CIT and all staff to encourage participation of the school faculty in planning, developing, and conducting a suitable and effective elementary school curricular program for all students in grades K - 5.
1.2 Collaborate with department PLC Facilitators and Director of CIT concerning curriculum revision.
1.3 Cooperate with the Director of CIT in directing the preparation of courses of study and curriculum guides to meet the needs of all students.
1.4 Collaborate with the Director of Special Education and Assistant Director of Special Education in preparation and coordination of all special education programs involving the school.
1.5 Interpret curriculum, outline procedures individually and in groups to help staff members evaluate their own work.
B. Instruction
1.1 Carry on a program for the continuous development of instruction in the school, consistent with the philosophy of the NWCSD.
1.2 Provide an environment for instructional efficacy which will stimulate the morale of staff, i.e. reasonable teaching loads, proper and sufficient material, equipment, and favorable working conditions for teaching and learning at the elementary school level.
1.3 Provide for teacher conferences and the observation of teachers for the purpose of enhancing the instructional program.
1.4 Observe, advise, direct, and assist teachers for the enhancement of instructional techniques.
1.5 Provide thorough evaluation of teacher performance and maintain complete records of evaluations.
C. Master Schedule
1.1 Provide for and supervise, with the cooperation of the appropriate staff personnel, the preparation of the master schedule.
1.2 Supervise the organization of grade level sections to provide the maximum opportunity for learning for each student.
1.3 Provide master schedules for (space and time allotment) use of facilities.
1.4 Provide reasonable work loads for professional staff and supervise the revision of elementary school teacher schedules when necessary.
D. Special Services
1.1 Collaborate with the Assistant Superintendent of Pupil Personnel Services, in coordinating the guidance, health, and attendance programs.
1.2 Develop and direct guidance procedures for individual pupils.
1.3 Coordinate services of the O/N Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) with the school
1.4 Coordinate the standardized testing programs.
II. Selecting and Developing Personnel
A. Selection
2.1 Assist the Assistant Superintendent of Personnel and Pupil Services in the recruitment of candidates for certificated positions.
2.2 Interview candidates for certificated and classified positions and participate in the selection of candidates for appointment.
2.3 Must be able to initiate, direct, and coordinate in-service training programs for certificated staff members.
2.4 Assist in the coordination of the student teaching program in the elementary school.
B. Dismissal/Tenure
2.1 Recommend probationary elementary school teachers for dismissal or tenure to the Assistant Superintendent of Personnel and Pupil Services.
C. Staff Evaluation
2.1 Periodically evaluate the performance and effectiveness of all certificated staff members and maintain complete records of evaluation.
2.2 Thoroughly evaluate the performance of each elementary school probationary teacher and maintain complete records of evaluations.
2.3 Recognize achievements of staff members.
2.4 Recognize the needs and interests of individual staff members.
2.5 Provide opportunities for teacher self-evaluation.
2.6 Assist in the regular evaluation and in special problem areas of professional staff performance.
D. Staff Communication
2.1 Maintain an open line of communication between the teaching staff, department chairs, coordinators, directors, and central office personnel.
2.2 Conduct general and individual meetings with the building administrators and teachers as needed
2.3 Prepare administrative bulletins/electronic communications for school personnel.
E. Staff Development
2.1 Direct and coordinate, with appropriate personnel, an orientation program for new elementary school teachers.
2.2 Collaborate with the Director of CIT, in conducting in-service training programs, workshops, institutes and conferences.
2.3 Improve teaching effectiveness by utilizing teachers' strengths.
2.4 Provide opportunities for faculty leadership in group discussions and planning.
2.5 Encourage teacher membership in professional associations and participation in professional meetings.
III. Student Development
A. Student Progress
3.1 Analyze pupil progress with school counselors.
3.2 Encourage good teacher-student relations.
3.3 Encourage parent-teacher-student conferences.
3.4 Recognize student achievements.
3.5 Assist, if necessary, in parent-teacher conferences.
B. Discipline
3.1 Be responsible for the development of satisfactory conduct among students in the school; the principal may take such action as he/she deems necessary, within the restrictions of the state law and policies of the Board of Education, to correct and improve the conduct of all students.
3.2 Organize workshops and discussion groups regarding student behavior and development.
C. Safety and Security
3.1 Formulate, publicize, and practice adequate arrangements for meeting emergencies such as: fire, storm or other sudden danger.
3.2 Plan and practices NYSED safety drills in compliance with annual schedule set forth and prescribed.
IV. Extra Curricular Activities
4.1 Provide leadership in offering special opportunities to meet and satisfy the needs of the entire elementary school student body.
4.2 Support training and experienced sponsors for the various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.
4.3 Provide an adequate program of extra class activities related to the instructional program.
4.4 Provide for the supervision of all class activities.
4.5 Provide student activity schedules and recognize student achievements in such activities.
V. Policies and Procedures
5.1 Disseminate and interpret school policies, regulations, practices and procedures to the staff.
5.2 Cooperate with appropriate administrative personnel in the development or revision of personnel policies.
5.3 Collaborate with the Assistant Superintendent of Personnel and Pupil Services by informing the staff of their rights and responsibilities, and cooperate in resolving problems.
5.4 Interpret and enforce school district policy.
VI. Records and Reports
6.1 Provide central office with the annual report of the progress of students, the work of the total staff, conditions of the buildings and in general, successes and limitations of the total operational and educational school program in the school.
6.2 Direct, supervise, and prepare statistical and other reports as necessary/requested.
6.3 Cooperate with other departments in the preparation of reports and projections.
6.4 Provide for the adequate maintenance and safeguarding of accurate school, staff, and student records.
6.5 Oversee the requisitioning, receiving, accounting, storing and distributing of supplies and materials.
VII. Funds and Facilities
A. Budget
7.1 Work with the central office staff in establishing the district budget.
7.2 Direct and supervise the preparation of departmental supply budgets.
7.3 Prepare the school budget and provide for purchase of adequate equipment, materials, and supplies.
7.4 Administer and safeguard all funds that may be received or disbursed by the school.
B. Management of Building Operations
7.1 Direct and supervise the clerical and custodial staff in the building.
7.2 Supplement auxiliary services where necessary.
7.3 Provide and control student accounting.
7.4 Work with Director of Transportation to coordinate the bus safety program.
7.5 Supervise the work of school lunch personnel and maintenance personnel so as to provide the best educational environment for students.
7.6 Make regular and systematic inspection of the school building with the head custodian to determine immediate and long-range needs.
7.7 Confer with the head custodian to better understand and help solve problems of the custodial staff.
7.8 Provide thorough evaluation of clerical, custodial, and maintenance staff performance and recommend personnel for appointment or dismissal.
7.9 Cooperate with Directors of Buildings and Grounds, Food Service and Transportation.
VIII. Community Relations
8.1 Interpret the educational objectives of the school to parents and other citizens of the community and encourage their participation in an effort to enhance the school program.
8.2 Represent the school through participation in activities of local, state, and national organizations and encourage other members of the staff to extend their participation in a similar way.
8.3 Cooperate with recognized social and law enforcement agencies in such a way that the services of these organizations are directed toward the best interest of the school.
8.4 Act as a resource person for civic groups.
8.5 Organize and conduct open house sessions to familiarize the community with the school program.
8.6 Recognize parent organizations as a medium to develop communication and understanding between home and school
8.7 Provide the Public Relations Coordinator (O/N BOCES) with information that may be released to the public.
8.8 Utilize community resources as part of the curriculum to enhance instruction.
8.9 Encourage appropriate use of school buildings by community groups.
8.10 Approve all communications released to the community for publications.
8.11 Develop and encourage all local methods of communications - school publications, email, etc.
8.12 Encourage student participation in community activities, both individually and as student organizations.
- Professional Growth
9.1 Attend conferences, clinics and workshops relating to the operational and educational missions of the district.
