Environmental Landfill Division FT Equipment Operator II in SANDUSKY, Ohio

Description of the Job:

Under supervision of the Landfill Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, or Foreman. Responsible for operating, maintaining, and performing some repairs on heavy equipment at the Landfill to dispose of solid waste materials.

Equipment Operator II- DOES, landfill Division

Essential Functions to be Performed:

  • Operates equipment such as bulldozer, front-end loader, grader, backhoe, bucket loader, tractor, and dump truck to excavate ground in order to dispose of solid waste materials in accordance with federal, state and local laws.
  • Transport solid waste materials, spreads and compacts layers of waste, and covers with earth according to specifications.
  • Inspect equipment prior to and after operation; identify existing or potential mechanical problems; wash equipment; steam clean equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as checking fluid levels, changing oil and filters, lubricating, tightening bolts, and cleaning points and plugs according to schedules.
  • Assist in small purchases and receiving, storing and issuing of supplies, tools and equipment.
  • Perform basic routine maintenance and make necessary repairs.
  • Work irregular or expanded hours as required.
  • Notify Superintendent when additional supplies, equipment or repairs are needed.
  • Repair or assist in repairing equipment as directed. Operate leachate system and leachate tanker truck.

Other Functions to be Performed:

  • Notify supervisor when more extensive repairs are necessary.
  • Examine incoming vehicles to prevent disposal of prohibited wastes in accordance with regulations.
  • Maintains road and land surfaces through the use of shovels, rakes, and other equipment and tools.
  • Assist in maintaining inventory of equipment, supplies and vehicles. Communicates information to general public, contractors, supplies, etc. responding to inquiries and complaints.
  • May assist in orienting and training employees.
  • May assist in an explanation of policies and procedures.
  • Maintains, records, compiles data and prepares reports as required.
  • Attend meetings and seminars.
  • May perform Scale Attendant duties.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

 Completion of the twelfth school grade or GED.

 Five (5) years' experience in heavy equipment operation.

  • Possession of a Class B, Ohio Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Tanker Endorsement (Requires three written tests: General Knowledge, Air Brakes and Tanker). ---or obtain before end of probation period.
  • Knowledge of heavy equipment operation, maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
  • Ability to spell and write legibly.
  • Ability to understand and föllow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates and supervisors.
  • Knowledge of safety rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of public relations.
  • Ability to learn and follow safety rules and regulations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Lift/carry a minimum of eighty-five (85) pounds.
  • Reaching with bilateral upper extremities into/up to/down to various heights.
  • Bend, stoop, and squat.
  • Push/pull with twenty-five (25) pounds of initial force.
  • Climb ladders/stairs.
  • Able to withstand extreme temperatures and vibration exposure with equipment tool use. Operate heavy equipment.
