ABM Industries Fire Life Safety Technician in Santa Clara, California
Overview
Key Responsibilities: The Fire Life Safety Technician must be certified and is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, testing, and repair of fire alarm and suppression systems, emergency lighting, and other life safety systems within buildings. The technician ensures compliance with local fire codes and regulations to ensure the safety of building occupants and assets. This role will be reporting to the Fire Life Safety Manager.
Pay: $76.92
The pay listed is the hourly range or the hourly rate for this position. A specific offer will vary based on applicant’s experience, skills, abilities, geographic location, and alignment with market data.

401(k) – You become eligible to make personal contributions beginning the first of the month following 30 days of employment. You become eligible for the ABM match beginning the first of the month following six months of employment. ABM matches your pre-tax and/or Roth contributions, dollar for dollar, for the first 3%. For the next 2%, ABM contributes $0.50 for each dollar you contribute. Your contributions and match are immediately vested.
Operation and Maintenance :
Inspect, maintain, and repair fire alarm systems, fire sprinklers, smoke detectors, emergency lighting, and other fire protection equipment.
Conduct regular inspections and testing of fire safety equipment to ensure it meets local codes and standards.
System Testing and Troubleshooting :
Perform system diagnostics and troubleshoot fire alarms and suppression systems to identify and resolve issues.
Verify the functionality of fire alarm circuits, alarms, and communication systems.
Perform preventive maintenance and adjustments on fire life safety systems.
Compliance and Documentation :
Ensure all work complies with local, state, and federal fire codes and regulations.
Maintain accurate records of inspections, testing, maintenance, and repairs.
Prepare detailed reports for management, including findings from inspections and any corrective actions taken.
Emergency Response :
Respond to emergency situations where fire systems or alarms are triggered to determine the cause and make repairs if necessary.
Assist with fire drills and evacuation planning, ensuring that systems are fully operational during drills.
Collaboration and Customer Service :
Work closely with building management, safety officers, vendors, and other stakeholders to address fire safety concerns and ensure system readiness.
Provide technical support and training for building personnel on fire safety procedures and system use.
Equipment and Inventory Management :
Maintain an inventory of fire safety equipment and ensure proper functioning and availability of spare parts.
Order and replace faulty components as needed to maintain operational systems.
Qualifications:
Education : High school diploma or equivalent; additional certifications or training in fire safety or electrical systems are preferred.
Certifications : Certifications such as NFPA (National Fire Protection Association), NICET (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies) Fire Alarm Systems or Fire Life Safety are required.
Experience :
Experience in the installation, inspection, operation, maintenance, and repair of fire safety equipment is preferred.
One (1) year of similar work experience
Experience performing duties to support laboratory, GMP environments, and/or mission critical preferred.
Previous experience with the following FLS equipment and systems: Emergency lighting, Smoke Exhaust and Heat Extraction, Gas detector, Gas extinction, Public address system, First Aid and other kits, Lightning Protection, Fire Alarm, Fire Extinguisher - Maintenance and Inspection, Sprinkler system, Fire Doors Maintenance, Smoke Detection, Fire Hose Reel, Hydrant and other systems
Skills :
Knowledge of fire safety codes and regulations.
Proficient in using tools and equipment necessary for fire safety system installation and repair.
Strong troubleshooting skills and attention to detail.
Good communication and customer service skills.
Working Conditions:
Must be able to lift heavy equipment and work in confined or elevated spaces.
Some on-call work or evening/weekend shifts may be required for emergency situations.
This role is integral to maintaining the safety and well-being of building occupants by ensuring that fire prevention and protection systems are functioning effectively.
The Technician completes assigned preventive maintenance and reactive maintenance repairs.
