Amazon Software Development Engineer, Alexa News in Sunnyvale, California

Alexa News keeps customers informed about the world around them by seamlessly integrating the news they want most into their everyday lives. We build large language models (LLM) based personalized news experiences across multiple devices, including the Echo Family, Fire TV, and Fire Tablet. These experiences touch every aspect of news, from lean-back (“Alexa, what’s the news?”) to specific questions (“Alexa, what’s the latest with the election?”). Our teams work in a fast-paced environment with people who are passionate about our customers, experiences, and systems. Key job responsibilities

We are looking for a passionate Software Developer to join Alexa News Michelin team to drive and build LLM based personalized news experiences across multiple devices like Echo Family, Fire TV and Fire Tablet. As an engineer on the team, you will be working closely with cross-functional partners like Applied Scientists, Product Managers, Business Development partners, UX designers, etc., in addition to Engineering teams across Alexa.

Key job responsibilities

  • Lead design and development of a complex, cross-functional, customer facing program.

  • Work with product / business teams to help define experience as we onboard new content / providers.

  • Design and implement system architecture and underlying components. Establish design principles, select design patterns, and instill best practices for software development across multiple teams

  • Work with engineers on the team / partner teams to help ensure we are delivering a consistent experience for our customers.

  • Lead and contribute to org wide design reviews to make sure right technical investments are being made to achieve long term success for the product.

  • Review and bar raise deliverables from peers via code reviews, design reviews, etc.

  • Mentor and develop engineers on the team to help get better in regards to the software development life cycle / processes.

A day in the life

As a Software Developer on the team, you’ll be responsible for taking on challenging technical and customer problems and building and maintaining quality products and systems. You should be able to build for the long-term, driving sound architectures and designing for stability of your systems, with the ability to evolve over time. You should be able to work with a variety of partners, Senior and Principal SDEs, Scientists, Product Managers to help define our experiences and requirements. You should have a strong sense of ownership, pushing for best practices and display a constant desire to learn and improve.

About the team

The Alexa News Michelin team is responsible for producing the most personalized and delightful news experiences for customers. We work on large scale back-end services and Large Language Models (LLMs) to help deliver great experiences to our customers. On our team, you’ll work directly with both our customer facing experiences and everything that happens behind the scenes to power those experiences. You’ll work to ensure that customers always hear the news that matters most to them.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience

  • 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • Experience programming with at least one software programming language

  • Programming experience with at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C# including object-oriented design.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 3+ years of full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $129,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $223,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
