Google Staff Software Engineer, Google Workspace, Abuse and Safety in Sunnyvale, California

Minimum qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience.

  • 8 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript).

  • 3 years of experience with Machine Learning (ML) algorithms and tools, or Applied ML (e.g., Large Language Model, Generative AI, NLP, Recommendations).

Preferred qualifications:

  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field.

  • 7 years of experience working in Applied Machine Learning team managing business metrics on user-facing products.

  • 3 years of experience working in a complex, matrixed organization.

  • Knowledge of safety, abuse-fighting or integrity.

In this role, you will lead critical Machine Learning (ML) protection efforts across Workspace apps, as part of the mission-driven Workspace Abuse and Safety Protections team. You will build enforcement and prevention solutions to stop harmful abuse, provide platform technologies to help developers and human content reviewers, improve Workspace’s measurement of safety and work to improve the user experience of people who encounter abuse or appeal our enforcement decisions. You will also be responsible for the content safety and security of all Workspace-wide Generative AI features.

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $189,000-$284,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.   • Set and communicate team priorities that support the broader organization's goals. Align strategy, processes, and decision-making across teams.

  • Lead critical work to prevent spam, phishing, and malware in Gmail via strategic improvements in our intelligence. Develop systems to detect and analyze ongoing attacks and propose new methodologies to prevent and mitigate them.

  • Develop ML based detection and enforcement such as online clustering, data quality improvements, model training, and prediction pipelines.

  • Develop infrastructure to support abuse fighting intelligence at scale and collaborate with Research, Trust and Safety, Product, User Protection, and Threat Analysis Group to ensure high quality deliverables.

  • Identify key improvements to Workspace enforcements through machine learning algorithms and systems innovations.
