Pacific Lutheran University Systems Administrator in Tacoma, Washington

Work Schedule:

FT; Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm; flexible schedule around core hours with some evenings and weekends for periodic off-hours maintenance.

General Description:

The Systems Administrator is responsible for the installation, configuration and maintenance of a variety of PLU's central server, storage, and software systems. This position works as part of a tight-knit team to provide full-stack support for mission-critical central computing services for the PLU community. This position will have the opportunity to learn how to troubleshoot and maintain a broad array of technology, including routine operating system maintenance, virtualization and containerization, security investigations, network architecture, identity management, and system configuration and automation. Primarily focused on Windows Server and Active Directory, this position will help support a range of platforms including Linux and VMware vSphere. The ideal candidate will be a highly skilled IT professional with a passion for technology and a strong commitment to delivering excellent service. Reports to the Systems Administrator/Service Manager.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor, administer, troubleshoot, and maintain Windows and Linux servers and storage systems including hardware, software and backups.
  • Manage and maintain Windows Server and Active Directory environments, including user accounts, groups, and permissions.
  • Implement and manage Group Policy Objects (GPOs) to control user settings and security.
  • Automate tasks using PowerShell scripting to streamline IT operations.
  • Provide user support for users with permission or access issues, including troubleshooting technical problems and resolving user inquiries (Tier 2/3).
  • Jointly manage and maintain a heavily virtualized environment including VMWare ESXi/vSphere hosting Linux and Windows guests to provide a scalable and reliable infrastructure.
  • Develop and maintain complete documentation on systems, procedures, and source code.
  • Coordinate with IT and campus colleagues in monitoring, investigating, & responding to security incidents.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with users and staff at all levels of technical experience.
  • Proficiency with shell and command-line tools, task automation tools, and scripting languages such as PowerShell, Python, Bash, cron, Perl, etc.
  • Ability to solve technical problems creatively.

Required Qualifications:

  • A combination of education and experience, equivalent to three years of job-related experience, sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the position such as those listed above.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Finalist applicants must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background checks.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related subject area.

Experience installing and maintaining Windows Server.

Familiarity with Active Directory and PowerShell scripting.

Experience with creating and managing GPOs.

Experience with hypervisor/virtualization platforms, preferably VMware ESXi/vSphere.

Preference for automating tasks to performing them.

Experience providing direct user support.

Experience with server configuration management tools (Ansible preferred).
