Summary: The main function of a Phlebotomist II is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.
Responsibilities
Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and decontaminate.
Update patient information and collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
Explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously.
Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
Fully understand all physicians' orders and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders.
Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
Package specimens for transport and store specimen samples according to required temperatures.
Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes and accurately label them.
Follow procedures specific to protocol to maintain the integrity of the specimens during transport.
Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
Attend annual department trainings.
Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.
Essential Skills
Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (if required).
Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
High School Diploma or GED.
2-4 years of experience as a phlebotomist.
Experience in phlebotomy, blood draw, venipuncture, and specimen collection.
Knowledge of specimen processing, centrifuging, and maintaining specimen integrity.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Great customer service skills and ability to switch between front desk and back lab duties easily.
Experience with geriatrics and pediatrics is a plus.
Ability to handle 30-50 blood draws daily.
Experience working in a primary care site.
Work Environment
The work environment includes working in a primary care site, where the phlebotomist will be standing for most of their shift. The role involves working within three different areas: drawing blood, greeting patients and providing customer service, and processing specimens in the lab. The phlebotomist will work as part of a team and will undergo one week of training at the start of the role.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $25.00/hr.
