What you'll be doing

As the Senior Manager, Technology Operational Risk, you will be responsible for fulfilling CIBC’s second line of defence review and challenge of technology risk across the organization. You will provide oversight and consultation to internal stakeholders on risk mitigating controls and best practices for technology functions and capabilities, such as Incident, Change, Service Continuity, IT Asset Management, SDLC and architecture for activities such as change initiatives, risk and control self-assessments and deficiency identification and mitigation. You will be involved in technology incident management and reporting, scorecard risk reviews, policy & standard updates, compliance monitoring, and risk monitoring and reporting to senior committees. Drive innovation across all areas of responsibility, applying expert interpersonal, communication, problem-solving skills and technical expertise to ensure that effective processes are in place by providing continuous improvement leadership with respect to operational risk management (ORM) methodologies and practices.

How you’ll succeed

  • Risk management – As an individual contributor, the Senior Manager, Technology Operational Risk applies a risk-based approach to review operational practices, risk assessments, controls, deficiencies, metrics, and other relevant information to form an independent view of technology risks and perform effective challenge to ensure alignment to ORM policies and framework and CIBC risk appetite. This includes independent assessment of business line activities such as projects (CIRAs), risk and controls self-assessments (RCSAs), Operational incidents, RAS and KRI metrics development and monitoring, etc. using various operational risk tools and processes. You will be required to maintain knowledge of core regulatory requirements related to the design and operation of technology controls, and provide consultation and challenge to first line partners over alignment of technology capabilities to meet regulatory expectations. You will identify material and emerging risks through proactive risk reviews and monitoring of key risk indicators and external risk events. You will effectively communicate areas of concern to ensure appropriate risk mitigation actions are taken.

  • Apply technical expertise – Leverage your breadth of technology experience and depth of knowledge in key areas such as cloud computing, network and infrastructure management, technology architecture, IT service management, IT Asset Management and development and deployment practices (SDLC, DevOps, Agile) to assess risks and controls of the business lines. Perform detailed research to produce risk insights on current and emerging technologies for distribution to various internal audiences.

  • Communication and collaboration – Build and sustain solid internal relationships to be viewed as a valued risk partner. Facilitate productive risk discussions and outcomes through clarity of thought in written and verbal communication. Develop and deliver insightful reporting content, presentations and assessment summaries on an ongoing basis for senior audiences and risk committees. Support the entire Technology, Infrastructure and Innovation (TI&I) Operational Risk team, as needed, where the application of their specific area(s) of technology expertise is required. This includes working on activities that support other Directors within the team thus operating in a matrix type structure.

  • Facilitate innovation – Support change and the maintenance of effective Operational Risk programs including new ideas that supports CIBC’s goal of an effective, efficient and radically simple Operational Risk and Control program.

Who you are

  • You can demonstrate experience. 5+ years’ experience in technology service management, IT operations, technology governance, and/or risk management in the banking sector. It’s an asset if you have industry recognized certifications in technology and/or risk management such as ITIL, CRISC, COBIT, CISM etc.

  • You can demonstrate knowledge. You have strong working knowledge of technology operations and technology services, management and development of best practices, processes and controls, and the regulatory environment and risk management practices.
