Canadian Tire Staff Engineer, Product Engineering in Toronto, Ontario

What you’ll do

As a senior technical leader on the Product Engineering team, the Staff Engineer plays a critical role in driving the evolution of our organization as we transition to an omnichannel retailer. This individual will be responsible for providing exceptional technical leadership and guidance to the team, ensuring the successful delivery of projects that align with Canadian Tire's strategic goals. The Staff Engineer will embrace challenges, be self-driven, and inspire others through their expertise in architecture and technical design. Their contributions will be instrumental in improving customer experiences, driving traffic, and boosting loyalty across our digital platforms.

In this role, you’ll:

  • Collaborate with multiple acceptance test-driven development (ATDD) teams to identify areas of improvement in architecture and technical designs.

  • Contribute to the development of middleware services and make architecture design decisions.

  • Define the long-term vision for your area of expertise within Product Engineering, aligning it with the company's strategic and tactical goals.

  • Coordinate with tech leads and other architects to assess the cross-platform impact of changes and mitigate any risks.

  • Create functional stories and deliver them to developers, ensuring features and changes align with cross-team architecture.

  • Work closely with development teams to ensure the delivery of quality code and scalable technical designs.

  • Assist Agile squads and pods in resolving technical challenges with wide-ranging impacts.

  • Provide decision support to deliver effective solutions and resolve problems within the team.

What you bring

  • 7+ years of experience in IT/Software Engineering in an enterprise setting.

  • 3+ years of experience working as a tech lead in an enterprise setting, preferably in Microservices development.

  • Proficient understanding of Typescript/Javascript/NodeJS, git, and standard agile practices.

  • Experience in API development and good understanding of web application architectures.

  • Experience with large-scale and high-availability applications.

  • Strong knowledge of asynchronous request handling (e.g., Promises, Asyncio).

  • Advanced/fluent English communication skills.

  • Solid understanding of software engineering best practices, including testing and QA/QC processes.

  • Experience conducting code reviews and participating in peer programming sessions.

  • Ability to review/create systems designs and provide feedback on design improvements.

Preference will be given to candidates who possess experience or education in one or more of the following areas:

  • Microservices architecture using NodeJS.

  • Working experience with Azure cloud services and Azure Developer Associate certification (or equivalent).

  • Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification (or equivalent).

  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines.

  • Familiarity with TDD (Test Driven Development) environment.

  • Experience working with NoSQL and SQL databases.

  • Technologies such as TSOA, InversifyJS, Swagger, Open API spec, Jest.

  • Cloud-native technologies: Kubernetes clusters, sidecar pattern, dev portals, etc.

  • Deep understanding of ELT/ETL tools, including Azure Data Factory.

  • Knowledge of Istio service mesh technology.

  • Understanding of Kubernetes, Docker, and containerization principles.

  • Strong grasp of cloud patterns related to observability, scalability, and fault tolerance.
