Qualifications for Employment
Education, Minimum Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree and two (2) years of experience as an academic counselor/advisor at the postsecondary level. Master’s Degree and experience preferred.
Pertinent Other: Previous experience and/or desire to engage in non-traditional advisement delivery systems (including on-line advisement) preferred.
Nature and Scope of Duties
The Advising Specialist reports to the Associate Dean of Academic Advisement and Retention or his/or her designee and performs the following duties:
• Provides academic advisement to students in all departments as needed including but not limited to via phone, e-mail, web/video-conferencing and in-person.
• Acquaints students with general educational requirements, College regulations, services and
opportunities.
• Assists students as they make decisions related to career, program/major, and selection of courses.
• Counsels students regarding the consequences of course withdrawal, insufficient progress, change of major, withdrawal from institution.
• Assists students in evaluation or re-evaluation of progress toward established goals and educational plans.
• Refers students to other institutional resources and services as appropriate.
• Assists with the advisor training program and development of advising resources.
• Participates in and provides administrative support for other programs and projects designed to promote student retention.
• Evaluates Transfer credit in coordination with appropriate Department Chairperson.
• Maintains records and generates reports relevant to the operation and evaluation of programs/projects.
• Performs other related duties as assigned and provides additional services that supplement the advising program as needed. Some Evening and Weekend Hours required.
This is a 12-month position with a salary of $44,000 with a Bachelor’s degree and 2 years of experience as an academic counselor/advisor at the postsecondary level, or $47,000 with a Master’s degree.
