Portland General Electric Senior Manager Real Time Trading in Tualatin, Oregon

Job Function Summary

Reliably optimizes PGE’s generating resources, contracts and transmission rights by trading in the electricity market while managing limited fuel sources like gas, hydro, battery storage and emission constraints. Transacts in the MIDC bilateral, CAISO, AESO and EIM markets. Analyzes and reacts to current market and environmental conditions. Responsible for analyzing and evaluating complex energy transactions to ensure that all relevant aspects, including energy price, transmission, counterparty and contractual terms, are favorable to and consistent with company guidelines for risk management. Collaborates with stakeholders in Power Operations, Risk and Grid Operations to ensure reliable delivery of energy to PGE’s customers.

Key Responsibilities

Manage Real-time Trading Operations Oversee current day electricity trading, generation coordination, portfolio management, risk management, and scheduling of PGE’s resources. Directs a team of highly skilled real-time energy traders, focusing on reliability, risk mitigation and resource optimization from 5-minutes in the future to the end of the next day. Guides the team in making financial decisions on operational matters and implementation of strategies that are in alignment with the company’s strategic direction and departmental policies. Ensures that load is reliably served, and contractual obligations are met while net variable power costs are reduced for customers and shareholders. Works closely with other commercial and operational groups within the organization to support the overall management of PGE’s power assets and transmission portfolio. Serves as a recognized expert in EIM operations, Western Power markets, and identifying price/risk tradeoff of very complex near-term wholesale market bidding strategies.

Strategic Leadership Collaborates with and provides direction to managers and officers across the organization on fundamental market information and to develop and execute optimization strategies. Monitors and maintains an acute understanding of market movements and trends; leads the team in creative thinking. A strategic player in market expansion and efforts to extract all market opportunities available to PGE with our assets and contracts; creates and sustain an environment that challenges the norm, creates efficiencies, and is forward thinking.

Operational Management Institutes and aligns operational planning across several groups to ensure reliable delivery to our customers while considering potential operational impacts. Promotes a proactive approach to the balancing of supply and demand while ensuring financially prudent dispatch of our resources. Aligns Real-time trading operations with Day ahead trading and PGE’s balancing authority to ensure an efficient handoff between teams. Solves unique and complex problems that have a broad impact on the business.

Functional Leadership Exercises comprehensive functional and industry knowledge in specialized areas; identifies and resolves complex multidimensional business problems; exercises delegated authority over planning, direction and timely execution for a functional area or program; establishes and maintains contacts with management levels within and outside the company and at government agencies and with industry experts in accomplishing function or program objectives.

Financial Management Sets strategy and develops plans, policies and processes for the accounting, budgeting and, where applicable, charging of department resources and services, including the definition of cost models and charging models; sets, negotiates, approves and manages all financial budgets and targets, ensuring that there is adequate funding for department objectives and plans.

Resourcing Oversees workforce planning and resource strategy across multiple departments, ensuring that there is adequate skilled resource to meet planned service delivery or department objectives; ensures integration with strategic human resource plans; responsible for recruitment, development and demand forecasts for multiple departments.

Professional Development Determines organizational development needs in line with business needs and strategic direction of departments; generates development strategies to achieve required change; monitors progress and evaluates business benefits achieved.

Education/Experience/Certifications

Education Requires a bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, engineering, math, marketing or other related field or equivalent experience.

Experience Typically 12 or more years of progressive experience in energy trading, derivatives, marketing or bulk electronic and gas system management or related fields; management and

leadership experience required.

Compensation Range:

$154,980.00 - $287,820.00

Actual total compensation, including a performance based incentive bonus, is commensurate with experience, skills, qualifications, education, training, and internal equity. While we anticipate the selected candidate for this position will fall towards the middle or entry point of the compensation range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis.
