The Radiological Control Division at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) is seeking a Staff Radiation Safety Engineer/Physicist to join the Radiation Physics/Neutronics Group and work in close collaboration with the Environmental Safety and Health (ES&H) Group at the National Synchrotron Light Source facility (NSLS-II).

Position Description:

As a member of the Radiation Physics/Neutronics Group you will be part of a team of specialists responsible for the radiation physics calculations for various projects within BNL. In this position you will perform shielding calculations for the NSLS-II accelerators and beamlines and support all aspects of shielding design optimization and measurements for radiation safety at the NSLS-II.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform calculations using Monte Carlo and other applicable computer codes to determine shielding requirements and other radiation quantities for accelerators and beamlines, and to estimate dose to personnel and environment.

  • Provide radiation physics support primarily to the ES&H group at NSLS-II and occasionally to other projects within BNL's accelerator complex.

  • Support radiation physics measurements to characterize the radiation field at NSLS-II for personnel and equipment protection as required.

  • Review accelerator and beamline designs to specify shielding requirements and ensure staff is protected from stray radiation fields.

  • Peer review shielding calculations performed by others.

  • Recommend additional shielding analyses that should be performed.

  • Provide support for safe radiological operations during commissioning/operations of beamlines by helping to develop procedures, reports and establishing protocols in conjunction with other cognizant ES&H personnel.

  • Support the BNL Radiological protection program through implementation of institutional and Departmental procedures, policies and work practices developed to keep dose to staff and the public ALARA.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in physics, engineering, or other closely related field or study.

  • Minimum seven (7) years progressively responsible related work experience, demonstrating a sound knowledge of current principles and practices in a specialized field of science/engineering.

  • A minimum of two (2) years' experience with Monte Carlo codes (e.g., FLUKA, MCNPX, GEANT4, PHITS, MARS) for radiation transport.

  • Document the calculation results in presentations and technical reports.

  • Demonstrated ability to determine shielding requirements for the radiation fields generated during accelerator and beamline operation.

  • Strong interpersonal and effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Master's degree in radiation/health physics, medical physics, nuclear engineering, or in closely related fields.

  • Minimum ten (10) years progressively responsible related work experience, demonstrating a sound knowledge of current principles and practices in a specialized field of science/engineering.

  • A minimum of three (3) years' experience using Monte Carlo codes (e.g., FLUKA, MCNPX, GEANT4, PHITS, MARS) to perform shielding analyses and measurement of complex radiation fields.

  • Peer reviewed published work involving radiation physics calculations and measurements.

  • Previous experience working in radiation protection and particularly at Synchrotron Radiation Light Sources will be an asset.

  • Document results of studies in presentations and technical reports and present your work in international conferences/workshops.

  • Programming skills (Fortran, C/C++, Python, bash)

  • Excellent interpersonal oral and written communication skills.
