The School of Social Work at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is soliciting part-time adjunct lecturer for the MSW program to teach one or two online sections of SOCW 589: Social Work and the Law course starting Fall 2024. This course prepares social workers to understand legal issues relevant to social work practice; and includes legal topics related to poverty, family relationships, racial, ethnic and sexual minorities, persons with disabilities, crime and delinquency, legal authority of social agencies and regulation of the profession. The courses will be taught online which includes a 90-minute synchronous (live) session on Zoom each week scheduled on a weekday evening.

The Adjunct Search Committee will screen applicants to determine whether they are a good fit to teach this course and for our program. If approved by the Adjunct Search Committee, applicants will be eligible to be invited to teach in the SSW as an adjunct lecturer based on teaching needs which may vary by semester.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Prepare the course for the semester using the master syllabus and textbook provided.

Update instructor contact information and dates in the syllabus and on the online learning platform that is provided (Canvas).

Prepare for class on Zoom (estimated preparation of 2 hours per week per course)

Teach (1.5 synchronous hours per week; plus assign 1 hour of asynchronous learning activity per week)

Grade required course work and exam

Hold virtual office hours (1.5 hours per week per course)

Participate in the annual Adjunct Orientation and Teaching Workshop in August and/or additional training and mentoring sessions as needed

Required Education and Experience:

A Juris Doctor (JD)

Professional expertise in legal issues relevant to social work practice (see above).

A degree in social work or other social, behavioral, family science, or social policy field.

Preferred Experience:

Master\'s or Bachelor\'s degree in Social Work (MSW or BSW)

Prior experience teaching and/or training in person and online.

Post-JD, post-MSW, or post-BSW professional experience of 2 years or more.

Appointment Information

There are multiple positions available. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the search closes.

Please note: Candidates may be offered an affiliate, non-service appointment initially; when teaching need is determined, salary and service will be commensurate with course load.
