Black & McDonald Limited Senior Estimator - Utilities Construction in Vancouver, British Columbia
ABOUT THIS CAREER OPPORTUNITY
Black & McDonald is actively seeking a Senior Estimator to join our Western Utilities team. Reporting to the Operations or Division Manager, the successful candidate will lead the team's analysis of cost estimates and preparation of electrical work take-offs on utility projects. They will provide technical support to project operations, with emphasis on electrical estimating, reporting and monitoring progress, planning, scheduling, and handling project change.
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Prepares electrical/civil work take-offs and estimates on utility projects including costs of materials, labour and equipment required for projects based on contract bids, quotations, schematic drawings and specifications
Assigning responsibilities for estimating team
Reviews project plans and specifications to confirm complete scope
Prepares conceptual budgets based on minimal information
Manages and coordinates the people, software and other resources for projects range that are fully defined like Bid-Build to conceptual such a Design –Build
Analyzes alternative means and methods to determine the most economic alternative
Identify risk issues and their order of magnitude
Coordinate technical proposal requirements with Marketing Department
Reviews- and/or manages the review and scoping of specialty contractors bids
Builds effective relationships with customers design team, specific contractors, suppliers and user groups that reflects and support company core values and meets or exceeds customer expectations
Actively participates in industry, client and community relations to enhance the company image
Advises on tendering procedures; examines and analyzes tenders, recommends tender awards and conducts negotiations
Establishes and maintains tendering process, sets up cost monitoring, reporting systems and procedures
Coordinates price packages with suppliers, subcontractors, owners, designers and architects regarding tenders
Participates in site review, tender review, tender hand-off, and project closing, as required
Prepares and maintains a directory of suppliers, contractors and subcontractors
Liaises, consults and communicates with engineers, architects, owners, contractors and subcontractors, and prepares economic feasibility studies on changes and adjustments to cost estimates
Lead and mentor junior estimators
Conducts material and equipment purchasing for secured key projects
Updates and maintains Bid 2 Win/Accubid database
Other duties as assigned

Degree or Diploma in
Construction Engineering Technology
Construction Management
Electrical Engineering
Trade Certification in Electrical trade school
The following certifications/designations are considered an asset
P.Eng. Designation
Electrical trades background
Gold Seal Certified (GSC)
Professional Quantity Surveyor (PQS)
Project Management Professional (PMP)
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
10+ years' estimating experience on utility construction projects
Experience estimating underground/overhead utilities an asset
SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Proficient user of:
MS Office (Word, Excel, Project)
Accubid or Bid2Win
The expected salary range for this role is between $110,000 and $143,000. The starting salary will be based on several factors such as the successful candidate's qualifications, including but not limited to education and experience. Salary is one component of Black & McDonald's total rewards package.
