Binghamton University's Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Partnerships is seeking a talented and detail-oriented Technical Writer to join our dynamic team. Our portfolio of programs aim to foster entrepreneurs through out the entire the innovation cycle and support a lab to market ecosystem for clean energy with a robust network of cross-sector partners. We do this through Technology Transfer services, the Koffman Southern Tier Incubator, New Energy New York, EXCEED and other programs run by our department. As a Technical Writer, you will play a pivotal role in documenting and communicating complex information clearly and effectively to facilitate understanding and action across various stakeholders.

The chosen candidate will research and draft articles intended for our digital publications, as well as create written content for website, email and print marketing materials to promote our programs. This is a full-time role with expectations of attending department events and occasional regional travel to report on events and conduct on-site interviews. The ideal candidate must also be open to flexible working hours and able to keep in touch with his colleagues via online channels.

To fully excel in this role, our ideal candidate should be a team player, an excellent communicator, and adept at organizational skills. Experience with work management tools like Airtable, Slack and Asana are a plus!

Responsibilities:

  • Document progress of our programs in technology development, covering testing, manufacturing, licensing, and construction activities for accessibility to non-specialist audiences.

  • Develop story ideas, research topics, and conduct interviews with subject matter experts to report on advancements in investments, R&D, technology translation, and workforce development.

  • Travel to partner locations to document capabilities relevant to various program audiences. This can include testing, manufacturing, trainings, certification process, incubators and community organizations.

  • Stay updated on industry trends, market conditions, and relevant policies to contextualize commercial strategy and development approach.

  • Capture oral histories from department staff, program partners, stakeholders, leadership, and employees to chronicle the organization's ongoing narrative.

  • Create content advancing E & IP's narrative and supporting business objectives through articles, blogs, fact sheets, newsletters, social media posts, and web content.

  • Communicate effectively to exchange information and ensure accuracy, neatness, and thoroughness in assigned work.

  • Research and write research-based content on battery and energy storage technology trends, breakthroughs, and news.

  • Develop, write, and edit technical documents such as research reports, white papers, and presentations to simplify complex technical information.

  • Conduct interviews with energy storage thought leaders within and outside our partner network.

  • Collaborate with program staff and technical experts to understand project requirements and transform complex information into polished, engaging content.

  • Ensure adherence to Binghamton University's Style Guide for all written communications.

You may also be asked to:

  • Occasionally attend scientific conferences and events to learn about scientific breakthroughs.

  • Travel to research establishments and network partner locations.

  • Plan and create written content for a magazine with our Marketing team.

    Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) field, with at least three years demonstrated excellence in writing skills or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Proven experience as a technical writer, with a portfolio of published work showcasing your ability to explain complex information in a clear and concise manner.

  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality documentation.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with a diverse team of professionals.

  • Ability to translate technical information into user-friendly language for non-technical and technical audiences.

  • Proficiency in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with documentation tools.

  • Experience in the energy sector or with energy-related projects is a plus.

  • Capability to coordinate, multitask and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.

  • Ability to work with a highly collaborative team and solve problems quickly and efficiently.

  • Ability to proactively collect, manage, and transfer knowledge.

  • Ability to seek different and novel ways to create efficiencies when working on problems, challenges, and issues.

Preferred:

  • Keeping up-to-date on scientific breakthroughs.

  • The ability to recognize a hot topic and proactively present it to our audience.

  • Experience using project management software such as Trello, Asana and Airtable.

    Additional Information:

Salary Range: $65,000 - $75,000 annually.
