The opportunity

We are seeking a dynamic Director/Architect to lead our Generative AI services within the Asia Advanced Analytics team at Manulife. As a key driver of our Generative AI initiatives, you will spearhead the development of innovative solutions. Your focus will be on harnessing Generative AI technologies like prompt engineering, retrieval augmented generation, function calling and agentic approaches and scaling them across Asia. These initiatives will empower us to derive actionable insights from data, optimize operations in contact center, underwriting and claims and enhance our sales, products and services to meet customer needs effectively. Your leadership will be instrumental in propelling our Customer Experience, Personalization, Operation transformation, and Digital initiatives in alignment with our established roadmap.

Responsibilities

  • Working with a team of Data Scientists and ML Engineers to build and support Gen AI services in Asia. Talent management, coaching and building a strong team.

  • Collaborate with Data engineers and IT Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to gain a deep understanding of source data and harness large datasets to prepare and optimize data specifically for the development of Generative AI-based solutions.

  • Develop and implement cutting-edge machine learning models to tackle complex business challenges, utilizing a diverse range of algorithms and techniques, with a primary emphasis on AI tech patterns like RAG and Multi-Agent approach.

  • Work closely with partners to gather requirements, design data models, and deploy customized solutions that are aligned with company’s Generative AI tech patterns and architecture.

  • Establish standardized processes, techniques, and tools as best practices for other data scientists, with a specific focus on Generative AI tech patterns and architecture.

  • Drive the adoption of insights from Generative AI solutions by influencing and collaborating with key stakeholders across the organization.

  • Innovate and explore creative methods to source and leverage structured and unstructured data specifically for Generative AI solutions using Open AI services.

  • Stay abreast of industry trends and advancements in AI/ML, with a dedicated focus on Generative AI tech patterns and architecture, to continuously enhance our Generative AI capabilities.

We are seeking a candidate who brings:

  • An advanced degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering, Statistics, or another quantitative field, complemented by significant professional experience.

  • Proven expertise in developing and scaling Generative AI solutions, along with a track record of solving complex business challenges through data science, with at least 8 years of experience in these areas.

  • Proficiency in data pipeline and machine learning production architecture especially with Azure services, with advanced skills in programming languages such as Python, R, and SQL and relevant prompt engineering packages like LangChain, LangGraph, AutoGen, Llamaindex as well as a deep understanding of agile solution development principles.

  • Hands-on experience with data frameworks and cloud platforms such as Azure, Databricks, and Spark, demonstrating a focus on Generative AI solution implementation and scaling.

  • Outstanding communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate complex data science concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders, particularly within the context of RAG chatbot development.

  • A solid track record of successfully deploying Generative AI solutions into production, delivering measurable business value.

  • Previous experience in insurance analytics, with a specific emphasis on Generative AI tech patterns and architecture using Azure and OpenAI services, is highly desirable.

  • Demonstrated experience in teamwork, showcasing the ability to lead and mentor a team of data scientists and collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams.
