Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) is a division of the Johns Hopkins University's Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. As part of the nation's first research university, AAP offers high-quality master's degrees and certificate programs at its Washington, D.C., Center, at JHU's Homewood Campus in Baltimore, Maryland, and online. Position description
We are seeking an adjunct faculty member to develop and teach a course on the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). The ideal candidate will have a combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience in cultural heritage law, repatriation processes, and Indigenous rights. Prior to course development, the candidate will co-teach with a program faculty mentor to gain familiarity with the program's goals and teaching approach. After this mentorship period, the candidate will assume full responsibility for designing and delivering the course content, integrating legal frameworks, ethical considerations, and real-world case studies.
The successful candidate should possess expertise in NAGPRA, including an understanding of the legislation's implications for museums, tribal nations, and cultural institutions, as well as experience working with communities or institutions involved in repatriation efforts in the United States. Strong communication skills and a commitment to creating an inclusive and respectful learning environment are essential. Salary
The expected salary range for this position is: $7,210.
The referenced salary range is based on Johns Hopkins University's good faith belief at the time of posting. The actual compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary and will be based on factors including, but not limited to, the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate - e.g., years in rank, training, field, discipline, other work experience, and other similar factors; geographic location; internal equity; external market conditions; and other factors as reasonably determined by the University.
Minimum Qualifications
An advanced degree in Museum Studies, Archaeology, or a relevant field, with a master's degree at minimum.
At least three years of professional work experience working with NAGPRA legislation.
Preferred Qualifications
A terminal degree in Museum Studies, Archaeology, or a relevant field
1-3 years of graduate-level teaching experience
Five years of professional experience working with NGAPRA.
Strong interest in advising graduate students interested in a career in the heritage sector.
Salary: $7,210
