Description of Work

This posting represents three (3) Transportation Worker II vacant positions located in Watauga County Maintenance Unit, Division 11. Positions 60021918, 60021939, and 60021949 will be filled from the same pool of applicants. All applicants will be considered for both (3) positions.

These positions are located at the Watauga County Maintenance Unit in Division 11. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of State maintained roads. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices, operating a variety of hand and power tools, clearing right of way, performing preventive maintenance and repairs to pavements, shoulder maintenance, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, ditching and shrubbing, and flagging traffic. Additional duties include inventorying and tracking quantities used of materials, performing manual labor tasks, and the operation of assigned heavy equipment. Applicants must have the ability to operate a small tandem dump truck. Work involves shoveling, raking, sweeping, walking and standing for long periods of time; and be subjected to all types of uneven terrain. Workers will be exposed to all types of weather and extreme temperature conditions. Employees must have the ability to lift and carry up to 80lbs repeatedly. Position also requires visual acuity. This position is subject to emergency call back, scheduled night work, and out of town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures policies

  • Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies.

  • Experience performing drainage maintenance activities (such as shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, and drainage structures)

  • Experience in snow and ice removal operations

  • Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper.

Additional Expectations:

The selected candidates must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation. Safety toe shoes are required for this position.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience

Necessary Special Requirements Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
