Job Summary: A Clinical Nurse Specialist Extern (CNS Extern) is a registered nurse who is enrolled in a graduate program and in training to become a certified Clinical Nurse Specialist. The CNS Extern will function within three spheres of impact (Patient/Client, Nurses and Nursing Practice, Organization/System, and is an active participant in the nursing leadership team. The CNS Extern specialty may be focused on individuals, populations, settings, type of care, type of problem or diagnostic systems subspecialty. The CNS Extern practices with the support of a formal mentor to integrate knowledge of disease and medical treatments into the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients\' illnesses. These nurses design, implement and evaluate both patient-specific and population-based programs. CNS Externs provide leadership in advancing the practice of nursing to achieve quality and cost-effective patient outcomes as well as alternative solutions that address system problems and/or patient care issues. CNS Externs serves as patient advocates, consultants and researchers in various settings. (ANA, 2004, p15). Specialty Practice: Reporting Relationship The CNS Extern position reports to the Associate Chief Nursing Officer. CNS Extern has an indirect relationship with the Director of Nursing (DON) for the specialty area or department. This dual reporting relationship is critical for the CNS Extern to function optimally across the three spheres of impact. Communication among the CNS Extern, DON, and ACNO facilitates mutual expectations and priority setting allowing the CNS Extern to enact his or her role at a unit and system level. EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION: A minimum of 3 years of successful work experience as an RN is required. A minimum of 3 years of successful work experience as an RN in a specialty area is preferred. EDUCATION DESCRIPTION: Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing minimally required. Completion of formal Masters or DNP program with CNS concentration is required within 3 years of starting CNS Extern role. TRAINING DESCRIPTION: Additional specialty certification/training as required by work area. LICENSURE DESCRIPTION: Licensure to practice nursing in Wisconsin is required. American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for the Healthcare Provider (BLS) or an AHA approved equivalent is required within 90 days.
