The Challenge

We are looking for an experienced Engineering Technician III to join our Winston-Salem 1 Construction team.

In this role, you will:

  • Serve as a senior project roadway/structure inspector supporting senior engineers in the administration of highway construction contracts.
  • Monitor contractor daily operations.
  • Perform/review test reports to ensure all work and materials conform to specifications, plans, and contract documents.
  • Perform contract administration, such as pay record entry/reviews, materials-received reports, certified payroll reviews, daily diary reviews, as-constructed plans preparation, and monthly quantity verifications prior to estimate payment.
  • Resolve daily constructability issues and troubleshoot problems to mitigate delays to project delivery.
  • Assist NCDOT staff and contractors in utility relocation efforts by inspecting and tracking relocation work.
  • Anticipate contractual problems and advise engineering staff of needs for plan revisions, supplemental agreements, or other contract adjustments to improve safety, timely delivery, and/or quality of delivered projects.
  • Monitor contractor operations to ensure compliance with subcontract agreements and with the contract Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with NC Sedimentation and Pollution Control Act and that all work performed in permitted areas is done in accordance with permits.
  • Direct and schedule the work of junior technicians in staking out and inspecting every phase of a construction project to ensure it is built according to contract documents in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Manage all aspects of assigned construction projects with limited supervision from senior engineers and be directly involved with the leadership, management, counseling, and training of junior NCDOT and contractor technicians.
  • Effectively communicate and coordinate work with contractors, subcontractors, utility owners, and property owners to minimize delays and disturbances while maximizing project progress.

What You Bring

  • Experience analyzing and interpreting highway construction plans.
  • Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.
  • Experience with mathematical functions including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision.
  • Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive communication between technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public.
  • Communications skills to effectively verbally and in writing communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner.
  • Ability to make independent decisions using sound engineering judgement.
  • Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, weather extremes, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction.
  • Fitness to perform moderate physical activity, including walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing
  • Strength to lift 50 pounds.
  • Computer knowledge and skills using Microsoft Office is preferred. Experience with iPads/tablets, HiCAMS, and SharePlus/SharePoint is highly preferred.
  • Advanced working knowledge of math fun tions.
  • You can work nights/weekends as required by project workload/staffing with fluctuating hours on any Division 9 project.

  • Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.

Education and Experience

  • Associate's degree in Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related field, and
  • 3+ years of relevant technician experience; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
